hello! I'm Aalok / आलोक
pronounce: /alok/, [AH-low-k]
pronouns: he/him
I am curious about the mind and brain. I'm ever-learning new and better ways to do scientific and creative work towards understanding the mind and our lives better in a number of ways.
My professional research interests include language cognition (how is it that we understand what we say to each other, and how does this work in the brain?), learning & memory (how do neural systems find good solutions to complex problems related to navigating the world?), and abstraction (how do animals construct internal models of their environment to make sense of the world?).
My artistic and creative endeavors prompt me to understand our relationship to the post-industrial world, to make things with my hands that form a cornerstone of our lives and more closely inspect our relationship to them, and to help create a more sustainable future. I pursue these goals via photography, woodwork, cooking, bicycle repair, metalwork, and community building.
In my free time I like to be outdoors {cycling, hiking, running, climbing}. When indoors, you can typically find me at the local bike kitchen.
